Interview: Matias Prado

¿Puedes hablar sobre tu viaje o interesar las artes?

Mi trabajo está principalmente relacionado con lo cotidiano con todo lo que veo en los recorridos de mi ciudad o bien cuando estoy de viaje, me entretengo mucho con la observación y eso me gusta llevarlo de alguna manera a mis libretas y crear situaciones que nos hagan pensar, me gusta desarrollar imágenes muy comunes que por lo general no nos percatamos.

Can you talk about your journey into or interest the arts?

My work is mainly related to everyday life, with everything I see on my walks around the city or when I’m traveling. I am very amused with observation and I like to take it in some way to my notebooks and create situations that makes us think, I like to develop very common images that we usually don’t notice.

¿Usas un cuaderno de dibujo? Me interesa saber qué significa un cuaderno de bocetos para usted y su trabajo, o cómo las personas desarrollan sus ideas.

Para mi uno de los materiales mas importante son mis libretas, son fundamentales en mi trabajo, siempre llevo más de una conmigo para todas partes, me gusta registrar todo lo que me llama la atención para no olvidarlo, hacer registro con ese trazo lleno de “errores y sin miedo” que se logra en primera instancia para mi es muy importante.

Do you use a sketchbook? I’m interested in what a sketchbook means to you and your work?, or how people develop their ideas.

One of the most important materials for me are my notebooks. They are fundamental in my work, I always carry more than one with me everywhere. I like to draw everything that catches my attention, so I don’t forget it. To do that registry with that “mistake and fearless” stroke that is achieved in the first instance, for me is very important.

Su trabajo es aparentemente simple, pero también es complejo y cuestionador, por ejemplo, ‘Sí, estoy cambiando’ o las intrincadas pinturas de varias personas que a veces hace. Dejan al espectador con preguntas, ¿qué temas está explorando a través de estos?

Me interesa mucho dibujar personas, ver cómo se mueven y dialogan, fijarme en sus vestimentas, mirarlos alrededor de lo cotidiano. Me gusta la observación, mirar, crear diálogos imaginarios y de esa forma registrar algo mucho más cercano para que alguien se pueda detener en mirar mis dibujos, incluso sentirse identificado de alguna manera.

Ahora mismo me encuentro fuera de la ciudad y donde vivo no ocurre nada de nada, es campo! Entonces toda mi observación ha cambiado bastante porque ya no suelo ver tantas aglomeraciones de personas, ni menos imaginar esos diálogos cotidianos que me percataba en los distintos lugares de la ciudad. Ahora, la mayor parte del tiempo, veo paisajes y cómo va cambiando la luz. Llegué acá cuando aún las temperaturas estaban altas y ahora estamos casi en inverno… Entonces ver todo ese transcurso, notarlo en el cielo, la tierra, en los árboles es increíble, nunca había visto pasar así una temporada es maravilloso y todo eso hace que mis dibujos vuelvan a cambiar.

Antes venía al campo solo por una semana, para desconectarme de la ciudad y volvía para retomar mi trabajo con más energía, pero ahora ya estoy viviendo en el campo. En un principio fue muy difícil sobre todo porque no hallaba creatividad, me ha costado mucho aceptar que mi “imaginario” está cambiando de nuevo, entonces toda esa nueva exploración y búsqueda es la que estoy tratando de registrar en mis libretas, pero estoy disfrutando el proceso.

Your work is seemingly simple, but is also complex and questioning, for example ‘Yes, I’m changing’ or the intricate paintings of multiple people you sometimes do. They leave the viewer with questions, what themes are you exploring through these?

I am very interested in drawing people: seeing how they move and talk, looking at their clothes, looking at them in their day to day life. I like observation, looking, creating imaginary dialogues and in that way put in paper something closer to people so that someone can stop to look at my drawings and even feel identified in some way.

Right now I am outside the city and where I live nothing happens, it is countryside! So all my observation has changed a lot because I don’t usually see so many crowds of people anymore, let alone to imagine those daily dialogues that I noticed in different parts of the city. Now, most of the time, I see landscapes and notice how the light changes. I came here when the temperatures were still high and now, we are almost in winter… So to see all that process, to notice it in the sky, the earth, in the trees, is incredible. I have never seen a season go by like this, is so wonderful! And all of that makes my drawings to change again.

Before, I only came to the country for a week, to disconnect myself from the city, and returned to resume my work with more energy. But now, I’m actually living in the country. So, at first, it was very difficult, especially because I could not find creativity. It was hard for me to accept that my “imaginary” is changing again, so all that new exploration and search is what I am trying to register in my notebooks, but I am enjoying the process.

¿Le resulta relajante o terapéutico el proceso de creación de trabajo? Cada vez me interesa más la relación del cuaderno de bocetos y el trabajo con el artista.

Para mí es fundamental dibujar, lo hago por lo menos cinco días a la semana y es parte de mi rutina, incluso tengo un horario establecido como cualquier otro trabajo.

Disfruto mucho las horas dibujando, cuando no lo hago me cuesta más expresarme, ando de mal humor, extraño mis materiales, mis libretas, algo me hace falta en el día. También me es muy importante hacerlo porque mucho de mis dibujos forman parte de mis conversaciones, es terapéutico: registro mis reflexiones, las cosas que veo y leo y todo eso hace que disfrute mucho el proceso de creación y ponga mucha atención cuando pinto.

Do you find the process of creating work relaxing or therapeutic? I’ve become increasingly interested in the relationship of the sketchbook and the work to the artist.

For me it is essential to draw. I do it at least five days a week and it is part of my routine, I even have a set schedule like any other job.

I really enjoy the hours that I spend drawing, when I don’t, is harder for me to express myself, I’m in a bad mood, I miss my materials, my notebooks, something is missing in the day. It is also very important for me to do it because a lot of my drawings are part of my conversations, it is therapeutic: I register my reflections, the things I see and read and all of this makes me enjoy the creation process a lot and pay close attention when I’m painting.
